Seeding and Sodding

Seeding and sodding are two different ways of achieving new turf areas. Each has benefits and drawbacks that you should be aware of when making a decision about what is best for you.

Sod installation offers immediate results. Upon completion you will have a beautiful, lush, green lawn. There will be little mud to be tracked in by your children or family pets and little or no need for spot seeding. Sodded lawns require extensive watering for 4-6 weeks until the new sod roots into the subsoil. Watering should then be done 1-2 times per week for the first 3 months following installation. Sodded turf also builds up thatch more quickly, browns out more quickly in drought conditions, and is more susceptible to fungi, molds, and other turf diseases and pests.

A seeded lawn requires much more intensive care initially, but tends to be more resistant to diseases and lawn pests in the long run. A seeded lawn takes 8 to 12 weeks to begin to look full, and up to 2 years to achieve the thick, carpeted appearance of a sodded lawn. Seeded lawns should be kept moist at all times during the initial germination period. There will be bare areas that need to be reseeded throughout the first season, and there is a much greater risk of erosion and wash out from heavy rains than with sod.

A new lawn, either seeded or sodded, can have a dramatic impact on the overall appearance and value of your property, but both will require maintenance and care to reach the desired results. Both should be aerated at least once per season and set up on the Barnes, Inc. 4-Step program. (See under Fertilizer Services) We recommend putting your lawn on a consistent maintenance schedule. Preventative care will help you maintain the health and beauty of your turf. It is also important to mow at 3 to 3.5 inches, mowing under appropriate conditions, and at appropriate times. Please see our care instructions for new seed and sod for additional information.

We can manage your residential project from concept to completion.
